WINDHOEK, 20 FEB (NAMPA) - The remains of Founding President Sam Nujoma on Thursday departed from the Hosea Kutako International Airport to the Omusati Region, where a State memorial service will be held at his place of birth, Etunda.
President Nangolo Mbumba accompanied Nujoma’s family to the airport, along with former President, Hifikepunye Pohamba.
Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila was also in attendance.
Nujoma died in a Windhoek hospital on 08 February 2025 at the age of 95.
Speaking to Nampa at the airport, Presidential Spokesperson Alfredo Hengari said Namibians should attend the regional memorial services to honour Nujoma.
“Before dawn today, the mortal remains of the Founding President were received by President Nangolo Mbumba at State House where we witnessed a solemn occasion, following which the remains were taken to the residence of the Founding President for a brief period,” he said.
Hengari described the late Nujoma as Namibia’s greatest political leader, saying he served the Namibian people with distinction.
On Friday, the second regional memorial service will be held at Eenhana in the Ohangwena Region.
“Following the regional processions, the remains will be returned to Windhoek, where he will lay in state from 27 February at Parliament Gardens. On 28 February, the mortal remains of our Founding President will be taken to Independence Stadium, until the burial on 01 March 2025,” Hengari added.
