WINDHOEK, 22 NOV (NAMPA) - The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) says it is impressed with the number of elderly persons who registered to vote for the upcoming Presidential and National Assembly Elections on 27 November 2024.
Speaking at a briefing for media and election observers here on Friday, Chief Electoral and Referenda Officer Peter Shaama revealed that a total of 1 051 pensioners born before 1925 registered to vote, while 27 964 pensioners born between 1925 and 1944 also registered to vote.
“It is quite a blessing to have this group of voters,” Shaama said.
Shaama also added that for the first time, the ECN has recorded different categories of voters living with disabilities. This includes a total of 710 persons with artificial limbs, 3 199 visually impaired persons, 1 742 deaf people and 16 106 persons with physical disabilities who all registered to vote.
He also revealed that the ECN has, for the first time, employed 14 permanent regional electoral officers.
“In the past, the commission employed temporary staff during peak periods as regional heads,” Shaama said.
