A Participant gets ready to walk the runway as they take part in competitions during the Love Pride Ball in Cape Town on February 7, 2026. Ballroom culture emerged in New York City in the late 1960s and 1970s, created by Black and Latino transgender and queer communities who were excluded from mainstream drag pageants. In response, they formed alternative kinship structures known as “Houses,” led by “Mothers” and “Fathers,” and organised “Balls,” competitive events where participants perform, walk categories and seek recognition within the community. A sediment trap used to collect dust samples is seen at the Banc d’Arguin on February 6, 2026. The Blue March held its second edition this year at the Banc d’Arguin, a UNESCO World Heritage site marking its 50th anniversary. The citizen-led artistic and environmental initiative is organised by the Mauritanian Environmental Association (AME), and was initiated by Mauritanian-born Malian film director Abderrahmane Sissako and Senegalese screenwriter Kessen Fatoumata Tall. The week-long collective walk aims to raise awareness of Mauritania’s biodiversity and foster dialogue on climate change and desertification among researchers, artists and policymakers.
