Archaeologists work to clean the remains of a body during the exhumation of bodies victims of repression executed between 1936 and 1939 during the Spanish Civil War and the Franco regime in one of several mass graves discovered in Barranco de Viznar, 10 kms north of Granada, southern Spain, on November 24, 2025. The remains of more than 160 persons have been found, of whom less than a dozen have been identified, in a total of 29 mass graves discovered in Barranco de Viznar. Spain marks the 50th anniversary of Franco's death on November 20, 1975. His regime honoured its own dead in the Spanish Civil War and left its opponents buried in unmarked graves across the country. The few surviving children of victims race against time to recover and identify the remains of their parents through DNA testing.
