This aerial photograph shows "claires" or shallow oyster ponds along the River Seudre in La Tremblade, southwestern France, on November 18, 2025. Oyster farming is one of the main activities in coastal Charente Maritime where over 3000 hectares of oyster parks are located. Dating back from the 17th century, oyster farming developed fast when salt marshes were abandoned with the end of the salt's monetary role and turned into shellfish farming areas. Along the River Seudre, oysters's refining takes place in "claires" or shallow oyster ponds where fine fattening is carried out over periods of around 15 days in basins where salinity is controlled.
