Indonesia's National News Agency - Antara -, was founded by Adam Malik, Soemanang, A.M. Sipanhoentar and Pandoe Kartawigoena on December 13,1937 to serve the struggle for national independence from the Dutch colonizers and Japanese occupation. Antara was the first to announce the proclamation of Indonesia independence on August 17, 1945.





Antara headquarters is in Jakarta. It has 27 provicial bureaus, manned by nearly 200 correspondents who cover news from the provincial down to the district, subdistrict and village levels. The agency also has bureaus in New York, Berlin, The Hague, Canberra, Tokyo, Beijing and Kuala Lumpur and correspondents in Cairo and Sana'a.





Everyday, Antara produces more than 250 news reports and receives more than 3,000 news stories from the AFP, Reuters, DPA, Xinhua, Kyodo, member agencies of the ANEX (ASEAN News Exchange), OANA (Organization of Asia Pacific News Agencie), NANAP (Non-Alligned News Agencies Pool) and the news agencies of a number of the developing countries."
